Chapter 18

Connor held the door open, looking at nothing, waiting at least thirty seconds before letting it close. “Morgan? Are you in?”

He didn’t hear anything, but his arm suddenly felt ice cold, just like it did when he was about to solicit those well-to-do guests for luggage assistance. He yanked his appendage away, rubbing the cold spot with his palm. “Geez, would you stop doing that!”

He sensed something else. He couldn’t hear it so much as he felt it. An apology. He grimaced. “It’s okay, no sweat. So you want to talk to Carmen? I’m going to call her.” He pulled out his phone, selecting the contact that a month ago he hoped he’d use for smooth-talking the pretty young concierge into a date. “This might not work.”

After a few seconds of ringing, the phone picked up. “Connor?” the voice said. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Uh,” he said, wondering where to begin. He might as well cut to the chase and find out if this was a stupid idea or not. “So, I have Morgan here, and she wants to talk to you.”

A long moment of silence followed, almost long enough to assume the call had been dropped. Just before he made sure she was still on the line, Carmen said, “I don’t think it works like that.”

“What do you mean, you ‘don’t think’? I thought you knew all the ins and outs of this voodoo stuff!”

“Ok, first off, it’s not voodoo,” Carmen clarified. “The craft my sisterhood practices is much older than that.”

“I knew it,” Connor said bitterly. “I knew you were a witch.”

“And second,” Carmen continued, “I don’t know all the ins and outs. I’ve never tried to talk with a Wraith over the phone before, and I’ve never heard of anyone trying to communicate with the dead using technology.”

“Well sorry, I left my crystal ball and Ouija board at home...”

“I don’t use those, either,” Carmen snapped. “Just cut the jokes and be quiet for a second. Morgan, are you there? Can you hear me?”

Silence followed, and Connor wondered if the Wraith was talking. “I don’t hear anything. Are you sure she’s there? How did she even contact you?”

“She put her icicle fingers on my arm,” he recounted with a shudder. “And I heard her call my name. She’s definitely here. I can feel it.”

“Okay, let’s try something else,” Carmen said. “Switch over to video chat.”

Feeling absolutely ridiculous, Connor did as instructed. When Carmen appeared, she was in bed, wearing a comfy tank top, and a beautiful azure pendant hanging from a gold chain rested on her chest. He only appreciated what he saw for a second before realizing how creepy he might be coming across. He looked away. “Uh, you see her?”

“It’s weird,” Carmen said, squinting as she brought her face closer to the screen. “I can’t see her, but I see an outline. It almost looks like the negative of a photo. Morgan, can you wave your arms in the air?” Seconds passed, and Carmen nodded her head. “Yeah, it’s her.
